Change of Heart:
Artistic Alternatives to Violence

Timeline:
- Initial Planning Meeting:
The success of the Change of Heart requires a
unified effort. Therefore the initial planning
meeting of 45 minutes to 1 hour requires a Program
Planning Team which includes, at minimum, the
following stakeholders: the CES artist for the
program, CES program coordinator, the school principal
or assistant principal, the school guidance counselor
or SAPIS, and either the school parent coordinator
or other parent representative. Goals for the meeting
include:
- understanding of the goals of the program
and the individual components of the Program
Package;
- Initial scheduling of all components;
- Recommendation for program evaluation procedures.
- Keynote: CES artist will deliver a keynote address
of one hour in duration to the staff of the school on
the subject of Enlightened Classroom Management.
- Teacher Manuals: 30 copies of the manual
Sunrise at 602: Enlightened Classroom Management
and 30 copies of the manual Teaching Curriculum Through
the Arts will be provided to the workshop attendees
as print support to the ideas developed by the keynote
speaker. (A school may elect to purchase more copies
of this manual if its staff is larger than 30).
- Staff Development Workshops: Two follow-up staff
development sessions will be provided to the staff of
the school, each of which will consist of a two hour
workshop, the first on the practice of Enlightened Classroom
Management, and the second on Applications of the
Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Number of participants:
30 teachers.
- Mentoring: A CES artist/mentor will consult with
the school staff, observing three teachers in their classes
during a day and following up with a individual consultation
with each teacher observed. The artist/mentor will be
on site for a total of 20 days. Total participants:
30 teachers.
- Evaluation meeting: The artist/mentor will meet with
the school principal or assistant principal and the guidance
counselor or SAPIS to evaluate the program results and
discuss what further steps should be taken to ensure
that Enlightened Classroom Management principles are
being practiced by the staff.
Evaluation: Teachers will be required to fill out
evaluation forms for both the keynote and subsequent staff
development workshops. Teachers will also be required to
keep journals about their observations of their own
application of the principles of Enlightened Classroom
Management, and to share these journals with the artist/mentor
in the individual consultation meetings following the
observations of their classes. These journals will also
be used in the final program evaluation.
