imagined first rehearsal by his acting troupe as they prepare
for a presentation before the Queen. Various other Elizabethan
characters join the fun as Shakespeare quenches fires and tries
to inspire his actors to excellence with the performance but
two weeks away.
Synopsis:
As William Shakespeare awakens on the morning of the first rehearsal of his play A Midsummer Night's Dream, he is reminded that the Queen's niece wants to play a part, and so decides to use women for the first time to round out an Elizabethan cast. His regular acting company begins to arrive, tackling various scenes from the play, some improvised and some already scripted. Also arriving in the theatre are various other Elizabethan characters including the production crew, an irate tavern keeper, a pickpocket, their landlord, and two bumbling spies who round out the hilarity of an already frollicking rehearsal. As the rehearsal ends and the cast leaves, Shakespeare falls asleep again over his re-writes leaving us to wonder if it all has been, indeed, a dream.
Description:
This 50-minute one-act is presented in the style of Elizabethan language, but simplified considerably for a student cast. The play features an extremely balanced cast consisting of 3 large male roles, and one large female role, plus 13 good supporting male roles and 8 good supporting female roles and a series of 7 additional non-speaking roles which can be expanded to accommodate the desired size of the performing company. Gender is interchangeable in many of the roles. Production ideas for sets, costumes, etc. and curriculum suggestions for a complete thematic curriculum are provided at the end of the script. A great play script for middle school kids or high school drama, even upper elementary school kids plays. Hard copy version is 8 1/2" x 11" in size, spiral bound so as to lie flat on a desk when open, and with color cover.
