You and your students will understand the inevitable forces which resulted in Christopher Columbus's story, his historic voyage to discover the land now known as the Americas as they recreate the historical time in their performance of this play. Full of colorful characters from another era, this play script is a perfect integration of theatre and history.

Synopsis:
As a Chinese and Islamic trader trade spices for carpets, we learn why the sailors from the Islamic countries became the middlemen between the Asian and European countries. In the next scene, the Islamic trader is haggling about price (which is now raised over 5,000%) with an Italian merchant, overheard by Christopher Columbus and his parents. Christopher Columbus vows to become a rich merchant, against his parents will, but on his first voyage his uncle's ship is attacked and destroyed by pirates. While shipwrecked in Portugal, Columbus's studies increase his knowledge of the world and of maps and he hatches a plan to discover a new trade route from Europe to China by sailing East across the Atlantic. He is refused by King John of Portugal, but finally his voyage is financed by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. After near mutiny by his crew, his voyage is successful in discovering the "New World," which creates great hardship for the Native Americans.

Description:
This 45-minute one-act play script features 1 exceptionally strong leading role (Christopher Columbus), 10 good male supporting characters and 2 good supporting female characters, plus a series of small speaking and non-speaking chorus roles whose gender is interchangeable and whose numbers are changeable in size, depending on the number of students to be cast. There is also one chanty song in the show. Good for elementary, middle and high school students from 4th grade and up. The hardbound version of the script is 8 1/2" x 11" in size, spiral bound so it can lay flat when open on a desk, and has a color cover.

Our drama club meets after school once a week and we are hoping to be able to perform for students & families sometime in December.
