Hanukkah Story play script for the Jewish holidays cover What an exciting way to see the story of the Hanukkah's origins come to life, complete with large cast, plenty of action, and historic characters. The cast will not only learn the cultural traditions behind this Jewish holiday (as will the audience), but they will also feel good about themselves as a result of perfoming it for others.

Synopsis:
 The members of a modern Jewish family are celebrating the Festival of Hanukkah and the father re-tells the story of how the holiday originated: The Syrian soldiers, in order to get the Jews to worship the statue of the god Zeus which they have just erected in the town square of Modin, determine to get one of the Jewish elders to be the first to worship Zeus as an example to the others. The elder, Mattathias, and his sons refuse to be moved by either threats or bribery to forsake their own religion. They are soon forced to destroy the Syrian soldiers who are threatening their fellow townsmen. The Syrian generals decide they must attack the Maccabees (Jews) on the Sabbath in order to control them and they send a huge army, which the Jews, under the command of Judah, the Maccabee, defeat. But though they have won, the Jews have lost their temples and their oil supply for the Eternal Light. A miracle occurs, however, when the Light continues to burn for 8 days without any oil, until the Jews arrive with replenishments.

Description:
 This 12 -15 minute play script features 24 roles of roughly equivalent size, plus an expandable chorus which can be any number to accommodate the desired size of the cast. This play script is excellent for upper elementary, middle or high school casts from about 4th grade or older and works well for adults or an intergenerational cast, too. Several mime battles add the potential for lots of action. Production notes are included. The hard copy version of the play script is 8 1/2" x 11" in size, spiral bound so as to lie flat on a desk when open, and with color cover.
